. The Whippletree,
(also known as the swivelltree, single tree, wiffletree, wiffle tree and whiffletree)
is used with horses,
to connect the two lines coming down both sides of the horse to a single line
that pulls the load.
My own experience with a whippletree came when I learned to pull logs with my
horse, Sam
I soon found out that the "antique" whippletree I started out with was broken
on the first heavy log, and so I started looking for a replacement.
I managed to break several pieces of wood in my search for a whippletree, as
my horse was a real goer.
Finally I built a whippletree from a wood called ironwood,
or hornbeam.
This one lasted through everything my 1500lb horse could throw at it: stuck
logs, big logs, logs getting stuck on roots at high speed, logs ramming other
logs or farm machines...
The ironwood made the grade and lasted for years, and Whippletree
Timber Framing was born.
