Reid Harding's addition in Bolton, Ontario

This project is based on a reclaimed 1800's house frame, and will be and addition to the existing home. Reid did much of the preliminary engineering work himself, placing a structural ridge into the frame, supported by crucks. The result is solid and beautiful.

The cruck timbers join the bottom of the posts at main floor level, the tie beam at 2nd floor level, then a collar and a yoke under the ridge.

Shaping the crucks: 1st choose the preferred natural curve, then adjust the other 3 crucks to the preferred shape with chainsaw, adze and broadaxe.

Joining the crucks to the old frame: The crucks were scribed to the original 1800's timbers and new roof timbers, primarily using plumb lines.

This project was cut at the Warsaw workshop, 2008.

"Finish" hewing the new timbers, the surface is scored with a felling axe, then the broadaxe cuts away approx. 1/4 in

Exterior Wall were fitted with Red Oak studs.
